FESPK-HKDWINTER - Hokkaido Ice Festivals 2009 Tour
Visit five winter festivals on this tour of Japan’s northern-most island, Hokkaido. Experience the Asahikawa Winter Festival; Sounkyo Ice Fall Festival; Abashiri Drift Ice Festival; Utoro Winter Festival, and the Sapporo Snow Festival. You’ll also see amazing ice sculptures in various towns along the route.
Each destination has been chosen so you can experience a variety of winter scenes, including an international ice sculpture competition. You’ll see small houses made of ice, and ice castles illuminated from inside at night. Saunter across beautiful scenes of nature, forests, mountains and marshlands covered in snow - you can even go walking on frozen lakes!
This is a tour for those who enjoy nature, and want to experience something unique. Take an ice-breaker cruise through the drift ice from the port of Abashiri. Resting on floating icebergs in the Sea of Okhotsk, drifting down from the Arctic, you may see Northern Fur Seals and Steller`s Sea Eagles, on the lookout for food. You can also ride on a steam locomotive across the snow-covered fields around Kushiro Marsh, and visit the woodcraft shops of the Ainu people at Lake Akan.
